Course Overview

Half-Face Respirator Fit Testing

A reusable half-face respirator depends on a proper seal against the wearer's face. StartSafe's Half-Face Respirator Fit Test uses a qualitative Bitrex procedure to assess whether the specific tight-fitting respirator being tested achieves an acceptable fit for the individual wearer.

Participants complete the fit test using their own half-face respirator and compatible filters. Respirators vary by manufacturer, model and size, and fit can differ significantly between individuals. Testing the respirator you actually use provides a more meaningful assessment than using an unrelated test facepiece.

The fit test confirms the fit of the facepiece being tested. It does not determine which filter or cartridge is appropriate for a workplace hazard. Respirator, filter and cartridge selection must be based on the actual contaminant, exposure conditions and workplace respiratory-protection program.

What You’ll Learn

Fit Testing and Respirator Use

Along with completing the qualitative fit test, participants receive practical guidance on wearing and checking their specific half-face respirator.

Proper Respirator Fit

Understand how a half-face respirator should sit against the face to maintain an effective seal.

Donning and Adjustment

Learn how to position, tighten and wear the respirator correctly before use.

User Seal Checks

Understand how positive and negative pressure seal checks help confirm that the respirator is seated correctly before use.

Equipment-Specific Fit

Understand that fit testing applies to the specific respirator tested and that changing the make, model or size may require another fit test.

Course FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Review the equipment, preparation and fit-testing requirements before booking your Half-Face Respirator Fit Test.

Do I need to bring my own half-face respirator?

Yes. StartSafe doesn't provide the respirator for this appointment. Bring the actual half-face respirator you intend to use because respirator fit depends on the individual wearer and the specific facepiece.

Do I need to bring my own filters?

Yes. Respirators and filters aren't included. Bring your respirator with compatible filters required for the fit-testing procedure.

Do I need to be clean-shaven for a half-face respirator fit test?

Yes. Facial hair can't interfere with the area where the tight-fitting respirator seals against your face. Arrive clean-shaven anywhere the respirator's sealing surface contacts your skin.

How long is my Half-Face Respirator Fit Test valid?

StartSafe's fit-test certificate or record is valid for 1 year. Another fit test may be appropriate sooner if you change to a different respirator make, model or size, or experience physical changes that affect respirator fit.

Can I eat or drink before my fit-test appointment?

Don't eat or drink during the 30 minutes before your appointment. This is part of StartSafe's preparation requirements for the qualitative fit-testing procedure.
