Course Overview

N95 Fit Testing

N95 respirator fit testing determines whether a specific N95 make, model and size can achieve an acceptable seal for the individual wearer. A successful fit-test result applies to the respirator tested and does not mean the participant is fit tested for every N95 respirator.

StartSafe provides qualitative N95 fit testing through individual appointments in Kingston. During the appointment, the participant is fitted with the applicable respirator and completes the fit-test procedure to assess the face seal. After a successful test, fit-test documentation identifies the respirator associated with the result.

StartSafe currently carries 3M 8210, 8110S and 1870+ N95 respirators. If your employer, school or placement requires a specific make, model or size, confirm that requirement before your appointment.

What You’ll Learn

Your appointment focuses on the fit of the respirator being tested and the basic practices needed to wear that specific N95 correctly.

Respirator Fit

Proper Donning

Learn how the tested respirator should be positioned and worn to achieve the fit established during testing.

User Seal Checks

Understand the importance of checking the respirator seal each time it is put on to confirm it is seated correctly.

Model-Specific Fit

Course FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers about N95 fit-test appointments, preparation requirements, fit-test records and what to bring with you.

What happens during an N95 fit test?

StartSafe performs qualitative N95 fit testing to determine whether a specific respirator can create an acceptable seal on your face. The fit-test result applies to the particular respirator make, model and size tested.

Do I need to be clean-shaven for my N95 fit test?

Yes. You must be clean-shaven anywhere the N95 sealing surface contacts your face. Facial hair cannot sit between your skin and the respirator’s sealing surface or otherwise interfere with the respirator's fit.

How long is my N95 fit test valid?

StartSafe’s N95 fit-test record or certificate is valid for 1 year. A new fit test may also be needed sooner if the required respirator changes or physical changes affect how the respirator fits.

Can I eat or drink before my appointment?

Do not eat or drink for 30 minutes before your StartSafe N95 fit-testing appointment.

What should I bring to my N95 fit-testing appointment?

Bring valid photo identification. If your employer, school or placement requires a specific N95 make, model or size, confirm that requirement before your appointment because the fit-test result applies to the specific respirator tested.
