Course Overview

Hands-On MEWP Operator Training

Mobile Elevating Work Platform Training prepares workers to operate commonly used elevating equipment through a combination of theory instruction and hands-on practical training. A typical StartSafe session covers both scissor lift and articulating boom lift operation, giving participants experience with two widely used types of MEWP.

The practical component is a major part of the course. Participants review equipment controls and safety features, complete pre-use checks, assess operating conditions, manoeuvre and position the equipment, and demonstrate controlled operation during an individual practical operator evaluation.

Private group and onsite training are available for employers who want to train crews at their workplace, construction site, shop, yard, or facility. Suitable client equipment can be used for onsite sessions, or StartSafe can help coordinate equipment rentals when required. Public MEWP courses are also offered on select dates based on equipment availability and enrollment.

Course FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers about MEWP equipment, hands-on training, course length, onsite group sessions, Working at Heights documentation, and certification.

What equipment is covered in StartSafe’s MEWP training?

A typical StartSafe MEWP session covers both scissor lift and articulating boom lift operation, including theory instruction and hands-on equipment practice. Exact equipment may vary depending on the course location and equipment available.

Does MEWP training include hands-on equipment operation?

Yes. Hands-on training is a major part of the course. Participants operate the equipment, practise key operating procedures, and complete an individual practical operator evaluation rather than receiving theory instruction alone.

Can StartSafe provide MEWP training at our workplace or job site?

Yes. Private onsite group training is available for up to 12 participants. Employers can provide suitable MEWP equipment at the training location, which is preferred, or StartSafe can help coordinate equipment rentals when required.

Do I need Working at Heights training before taking MEWP training?

Working at Heights and MEWP operator training are separate forms of training. For construction applications where Working at Heights training is required, participants should bring proof of valid training before the MEWP course.

How long is StartSafe’s MEWP training certificate valid?

StartSafe’s MEWP training certificate is valid for five years. This is StartSafe’s certificate period and should not be interpreted as a statement that Ontario currently requires every MEWP operator certificate to follow the same renewal period.
