A reusable half-face respirator needs to form a proper seal against your face to do its job. We use qualitative Bitrex fit testing to determine whether your specific respirator provides an acceptable fit for you.
Bring the half-face respirator and compatible filters you use at work to your appointment. Fit is specific to the wearer and the respirator being tested, so passing with one manufacturer, model, or size does not mean another respirator will fit the same way.
Your fit test confirms the fit of the facepiece. It does not determine which filters or cartridges are appropriate for the hazards in your workplace. That selection should be based on your workplace hazards, exposure conditions, manufacturer requirements, and your employer’s respiratory-protection program.
Fit testing is one part of proper respiratory protection. Your employer’s program should also address respirator selection, use, inspection, cleaning, maintenance, and worker instruction.

Appointments typically take approximately 10–15 minutes and are completed in person in Kingston. Bring your own respirator, compatible filters, and photo identification, and arrive clean-shaven in the respirator sealing area.

What should I bring to my half-face fit test?
Bring the actual half-face respirator you intend to use, compatible filters required for the fit-testing procedure, and valid photo identification. Your respirator should be complete, functional, and ready to wear. We do not supply half-face respirators or filters for these appointments.
How should I prepare before my appointment?
Arrive clean-shaven anywhere the respirator's sealing surface contacts your face, and do not eat or drink during the 30 minutes before your StartSafe appointment. Facial hair that interferes with the sealing area can prevent an effective fit and may prevent the fit test from being successfully completed.
What kind of fit test will I receive?
We perform qualitative fit testing using Bitrex for Half-Face Respirator Fit Testing. The test assesses whether the specific tight-fitting respirator being tested can achieve an acceptable fit on your face.
How long is my half-face fit-test record valid?
Our fit-test record or certificate is valid for one year. You may need another fit test sooner if you change respirators or experience a physical change that could affect fit. The one-year period is StartSafe's service standard and should not be interpreted as a universal Ontario annual fit-testing requirement.
Does my fit test tell me which filters or cartridges I need?
No. The fit test checks whether the facepiece can achieve an acceptable fit on your face. Selecting the correct filter or cartridge depends on the workplace hazard, contaminant, respirator manufacturer instructions, and your employer's respiratory-protection program.
