Course Overview

Hands-On MEWP Operator Training

Mobile Elevated Work Platform Training prepares workers to operate MEWPs through a combination of theory instruction and hands-on practical training. A typical session covers both scissor lift and articulating boom lift operation, subject to equipment availability.

The practical component is a central part of the course. Participants review controls and safety features, complete or review pre-use checks, assess operating conditions, manoeuvre and position equipment, and demonstrate controlled operation during an individual practical operator evaluation.

MEWP operation can involve hazards such as falls, ejection, crushing, collision, overhead obstructions, electrical hazards, tip-over, and unsuitable ground conditions. Training helps participants recognize these hazards and develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to operate equipment more safely.

Private group and on-site training are available at suitable workplaces, construction sites, shops, yards, facilities, and other appropriate locations. Client-supplied equipment is preferred for on-site training because it allows workers to practise with equipment relevant to their workplace. If suitable equipment is not available, we can help coordinate rental equipment when required.

Public MEWP courses are offered on select dates based on equipment availability and enrollment. For teams, private on-site training generally provides greater scheduling flexibility.

Course FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers about the equipment you’ll train on, hands-on operation, private on-site training, Working at Heights requirements, and certificate validity.

What equipment will I train on?

A typical StartSafe MEWP course covers both scissor lift and articulating boom lift operation, with theory instruction and hands-on equipment practice. Exact equipment availability may vary by course location and equipment arrangements.

Will I get hands-on equipment training?

Yes. Hands-on training is a major part of the course. You’ll operate the equipment and complete an individual practical operator evaluation rather than receiving theory instruction alone.

Can I book MEWP training for my crew at our workplace or job site?

Yes. We offer private on-site group training for employers training multiple workers. Your workplace may provide suitable MEWP equipment for the practical component, which is our preferred arrangement. If suitable equipment is not available, we can help arrange rental equipment through local rental contacts. Contact us to confirm equipment, location, group size, and scheduling.

Do I need Working at Heights training before taking MEWP training?

MEWP operator training and Working at Heights training are separate. For Ontario construction work where you will use fall-protection equipment and Working at Heights requirements apply, you should have valid CPO-approved Working at Heights training in addition to MEWP operator training. Bring proof of your Working at Heights training where applicable.

How long is my StartSafe MEWP certificate valid?

Our MEWP training certificate is valid for five years under our current certificate policy. Ontario's new MEWP regulation comes into force on January 1, 2027 and establishes a five-year validity period for training that meets the prescribed requirements. For training completed before that date, our five-year certificate period should not be interpreted as a current Ontario statutory renewal requirement.

Training Your Crew?

Private on-site training allows employers to train up to 12 participants together while reducing employee travel and coordinating training around workplace operations. Client-supplied equipment is preferred, or we can help arrange rental equipment when required.
