The purpose of traffic control is to protect crews working on the road from traffic hazards. It also aims to protect the motoring public and pedestrians who may not be aware of the hazards surrounding the work area. Every year workers working in public roadways are injured because of traffic-related incidents. The regulations for construction projects require employers to have a traffic protection plan in place that ensures workers are protected at all times. In addition, a specific traffic control plan, designed to protect both workers and commuters, must be developed and implemented.

Overview

During this course we will review and discuss the following topics:

  1. The specific and often unpredictable hazards of traffic.

  2. Risk factors associated with traffic accidents.

  3. The purpose of temporary traffic control.

  4. When traffic control person(s) should be used.

  5. Legal requirements for training and how to apply it to any traffic control plan.

  6. Where traffic control persons should be positioned.

  7. Proper signalling and communication between traffic controllers.

  8. Proper personal protective equipment required for traffic controllers.
