WHMIS stands for the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. It is a comprehensive system for providing health and safety information on hazardous products intended for use, handling, or storage in Canadian workplaces.

As of December 2018, Canada has aligned the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), now known as WHMIS 2015.

The purpose of WHMIS is to ensure employers and workers receive consistent and comprehensive Health and Safety information about the hazardous products they may be exposed to at work.

The Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) requires employers to ensure hazardous products are identified, to obtain safety data sheets and make them available in the workplace, and to provide instruction and training to all workers.
